Boots Vs Foot Straps

Boots Vs Foot Straps - Ride with Blake Vlog 26

It’s a common question. Should I switch to boots? The answer is that it depends.
This video breaks down the pros and cons behind Boots Vs Straps.

Footstraps and Footpads
The chill side of every relationship. They’re the ones that say, “Baby, I know you need your space. Go have fun with your friends.” And you think, “Aw, sweet!” So you leave your humble abode (your board, in this case), take off with your friends (perform some sick tricks), and arrive back home at two o’clock in the morning with no angry partner (place your feet back on the board). You’re able to do what you want, when you want, and that makes your riding experience all the better.

Bindings and Boots
The more clingy of the two, you notice a bit of crazy in your partner. They’re pretty good-looking, but they don’t like to let go (meaning, they’ll be able to grip you to your board through the entire ride). You’ll be finding yourself less flexible with your time, but that’s okay if you don’t like to go out as much.
No matter your choice, MACkite will be your wingman to get you the proper footwear you need*.

*Relationship advice not included

Let’s start with the Pros for kiteboarding footstraps.
More flexibility for grabs and style
Lightweight for travel and general feel
Better upwind-ability
Softer falls
Less expensive

What about the cons for foot straps?
Less control
You can’t land as hard
They are not suited for kickers or features

So what are the pros for boots?
You can ride on just about any surface
Ride finles
Ride features
They have a locked in feel
You can just ride harder

And the cons for boots.
They are heavier
Less upwind ability
They take more time to get in and out of
Harder falls as you’re locked in
More expensive

All that said, why not ride it all. There is a time and a place for boots, straps, strapless, and of course foilboarding. There is no need to limit yourself. If you are curious about boots then give them a go!

I think the list should realistically include cons for boots...
Dangerous when rolled in surf and high wind onshore conditions..

You can ride finless with straps...since when are those mutually exclusive? Also upwind ability isn't hampered with boots...unless you are just saying a heavier board setup goes upwind less.

Also when I still rode straps I would have the problem of when I was doing rolls fast one of my feet would occasionally come out as I was spinning. Definitely got some feet and ankle injuries from that.

Yeah boots + surf = sketchy for sure. Have to make sure your core strength is up to snuff.

I really don't understand where the "boots don't go upwind as well as straps" thing came from, I hear it all the time. It's exactly the same...

I watched the video it's good. The bullet points though they are really confusing (the upwind thing especially is confusing Blake makes it clear in the video what he's talking about). Anyway, don't read the bullet points, they don't make sense, watch the video instead.

Cons for boots.......you need a screw driver to do a board-off.

  As always, reasonable minds can differ. But this exchange got me thinking about the huge boosts and technical proficiency of some of the better riders. While I don't recommend it, I'd bet that somebody out there can do a board-off with loose fitting boots. It's possible, don't you think?? I'd love to see the video?? :o :o

I have done board offs in my boots. Your triceps will ache for days after though. You can either wear your boots super loose or you can ride feet out of the bindings and ride it like you would snowboarding with a stomp pad.
