Was it Nick or Kevin?

Postby Hugh2 » Wed Dec 06, 2017 7:52 pm

Yesterday while kiting at Sunset Beach in Cape Town I went far out in the bay to intercept one of the Volvo Ocean Race boats, called Turn the Tide on Plastic, as they came charging across towards the beach. I met up with them about a mile out and rode along for a while, but there was a hotshot kiter following them, and he continued when they tacked and headed back west. Turns out it was Kevin Langaree and he posted a great video of it as KEVVLOG #35 on Youtube.

So today I was riding at Bloubergstrand late in the day, about 5:30, and again went out a bit to try to reach another VOR boat, Brunel, who also had a kiter nearby them, plus a helicopter. Then they took off west and easily outran me, but then the kiter took off and kept flying higher and higher. They went far across the bay and the kiter must have gotten over 10 times the height of the VOR mast and as far downwind, with the helicopter following along, presumably filming. I presume this was an extreme version of the "skywalk" by Alex Thompson with his IMOCA boat Hugo Boss.

Question is, was it Kevin again or what it Nick Jacobsen this time. He's crazy enough to do it!

Pretty sure it was Nick who posted something related on his instagram.

Me thinks Nick is a little perturbed at that woo record. Well done to get it out of your system, buddy!

Cool, thanks for finding it. Something tells me Nick did not have a little emergency parachute on his chest like Jesse appears to have had. The video should be fun.

No wind today, and little tomorrow, but Saturday will crank here.

And here's the video! Not only no emergency parachute that I can see, but he did not even secure his chicken loop!

I think he's wearing a purple backpack parachute, which is probably why he doesnt have his chickenloop in so he can quickly ditch the kite if something goes wrong.

Good point, I had missed the parachute in one of the early scenes. Nuts all the same. And why not go for 300m while you are at it? Perhaps the line was not long enough. He was up there for a long time, I eventually got scared about being that far out in the bay on my own and turned back before he let go.
