Postby vevans212 » Tue Mar 13, 2018 12:34 am

Hi! I'm heading to Maui in a couple of days to kitesurf, and just wondering which size kites would be best to take?

Help greatly appreciated!!

Are we supposed to guess your board type, weight, etc?

7 and 9. Especially into the summer.

But seriously, the kite you don't take is the kite you need.

Can you just suggest a kite size for all weights and board combinations, that way anyone headed to Maui will benefit.

I have only been over xmas, which can be an iffy wind time. So I brought the whole quiver, from 5m to 12m. Though looking at the 2 week forecast before I went, I left the 3m and 17m at home (didn't need 17m as I brought my foil too) ;-) Turned out I only needed 12m once and needed the 5m twice. Prior trip I had 3 days that were lighter than comfortable 12m.

My thinking is: if you are spending $5-10k on a once a year dream trip, then spend the extra $50 to bring an extra suitcase with your extra kites. You don't want to be short the kite you need and lose a day's kiting, just to save that little $.

Sorry - board is 138 twin tip, weight 85kg. Just at the stage of learning to jump (so not a pro by any means!). Was just looking for a rough guide, as I'm wondering whether to take a 7 and a 9 or a 9 and a 12! Thanks :)

Bring all 3 if you are worried about missing a session. I am your weight, live on Maui and a 10m is my biggest kite. I get 90% of the days. You will probably be on 7m the most. If you have to choose, I say 7,9

I was there the week before last and used a 7m every day. However, I have had trips in March when I brought a 15m foil and used that half the time. In the summer, you can get by with a 7 & 9 most days, this time of year is a crap shoot. If you want to ride more often, bring a wider range. Locals are often picky and just skip light wind days or foilboard.

Anyone have thoughts on the down side of renting gear on Maui? I am headed out next month (first time there) and found a company that rents gear. I am looking at only taking my harness. They said I can switch kites and boards as needed.
