HyperLink 7m vs Soul 6m - wave performance

Postby flying grandpa » Fri Jun 22, 2018 3:46 pm

I am still in search after a good foil kite for hydrofoil wave riding /carving.

After just three chest high wave sessions on Spitfire XL (80 kg; 15-25 knots; 17m linenes)with HL7 and many more sessions on Spitfire XL (13-17 knots; 17m lines) with Soul6, I’m finding more HL advantages over Soul.

HyperLink
+ kite delivers smooth pull through power zone
+ sits deeper in wind window, delivering consistent power
+ easy, fast inflation due to many elliptic holes in each rib
+ good bar power control range
+ big upper range for foiling +25 knots
+ drifts
- a bit slow turns
- in waves or shore-break relaunch may be tricky as the outside air inlets are dragging water inside sometimes.

Soul
+ superfast, dynamic, gives huge pull for waterstart
+ easy, sometimes auto water relaunch, also in shorebreak. It slides on waves rather, than beeing dragged by them.
+ fast turning
- atomic pull in power zone
- overflies edge of wind window loosing power
- poor drift
- short bar moves cover whole power range
- not for wavefoiling and carving at winds above 17 knots

What are your opinions?

You are flying the smaller kite in less wind?

I typically fly HL7 in 13-17 knots and could also do a 6m tube kite in those winds. Have also done HL7 up to 25.

But if the wind is so different, is it fair to compare two kites?

Nice "review". Good info. Perhaps what gives Soul upper edge vs HL in larger sizes could make it less desirable in smaller if freeriding in waves is your thing.

Yes, jakemoore.
Thanks to Soul speed it gives enough pull in less wind.
Pull force is proportional to wind velocity for the kite squared.
It is also proportional to kite area, (but not squared).
I can waterstart erlier with Soul6 than with HyperLink7.

On the other hand, in gusty conditions and windshifts overflying wind window edge is a nasty behaviur. It is dangerous if the kite frontstall, falling from the sky and 3-4 m above water catch the wind in the middle of power zone. Flysurfer warns about this kite behaviour and suggest to pull safety release in Soul manual.
It happened to me once with another kite, and beleve me, it was dangerous for my spine. Fortunately, one power line broke and that probably saved my health.

So, yes, it is fair to compare different sizes in theirs sweet spots.

borist, you’ve got to the point.

That overflying tendency can be tuned out with the profile adjusters. I think activating the ones on the bottom will do this. In gusty wind I always keep the back lines tight without slack which helps prevent overfly.

Until now I did’t experiment with profile adjusters. It may be more complicated than it looks, and done unproperly, may be dangerous in strong, gusty winds. I’m afraid to create a mess difficult to understand.
In addition, power peak at power zone you can manage sometimes going downwind, but not every time. To often crash is the outcome.
Soul 10 doesn’t show any similar behaviour. But it is better for boosting and carving in moderate winds, than for waves.

If you shorten the profile adjusters on the bottom skin, it will increase camber and kite will overfly more. You would want to instead shorten the top skin to reduce overflying.

Thanks foilhoilo, I wasn’t sure which it was. Should be fairly easy to do. Do one at a time and test between. If the kite acts in worse behavior, undo what you did. Could be that yours was activated accidentally from the factory. From the factory I think only the 21m comes with any activated. Might be something to look for.

Effect of the PMA is small and mostly changes the kite behavior when the lines are slack, e.g. the wingtips folding in when turning. Would consider adjusting the mixer before the PMA, e.g. shortening C by 1/2 cm.
