I have to chime in here a little. I do admit that the Hyperlink and R1 fill up quite quickly with water, but only when there is a human still attached to the bar. Recently I have been doing a lot of stupid things like letting go of the kite and letting it fly and trying to catch in up whilst pumping the foil. Quite a few times I have lost the kite completely and have had to swim for a long time to get to the kite, or in stronger winds I have had to swim to shore and get the boat . Anyways in these situations that kite has not had any water in it, even after almost 20 minutes of sitting on the water. Not once in such a case have I had a problem with water in it.

So it probably has more to do with the the extra resistance of a person pulling against the kite, or the position of the intakes when there is such resistance. Any thoughts on this?

I do have video of one of these incidence where I had to swim after my kite, so if you would like to see it, just let me know and I will upload it.

Dude, that's got to be the most intense 2 minutes of swimming music I've ever heard; reminded me of the Game of Thrones soundtrack!

I've drowned my Hyperlink 3 times but it was always when the wind dropped below 8 knots. I've never had an issue relaunching above that.

Im keen to try some techniques others mentioned in another thread recently on how to relaunch a drowned kite as Im certain my skills weren't up to it.

To your original post on air pressure, ive had my hyperlink lying in the beach after a session next to a V3 Chrono and Speed 5 and that is the order in which the three kites hold their air from worst to best.

If the front vents are leaking you should be able to feel it on the ground in very light wind with a hot kite and hand in front of the vent.

Wow Gunnar - looks like you have a craving for drama! I think that’s the first I’ve ever heard of someone intentionally ditching their kite during a session and trying to catch it up in the air! Should have a large ‘don’t try this at home’ warning attached....

It's a game played on land. Can be done with waves to. I think it is quite possible with a hydrofoil in light wind, you could ride the swell etc aswell. Would make a good little clip in kite videos. Swapping between 2 riders would be even better now I think about it.

I think people have missed the point of the video. My question was: Why does the kite not fill up with water in a situation like this?

I’m sure it’s a question of the downward pull when a rider is attached. However somewhat irrelevant to most of us who don’t plan to be completely detaching our kites!

Quite easy answer. Because you have barely left it on the water. It is not a fast relaunch but also not a slow one. I will also add the vents avoid taking any water and narrowly miss some of the whitewash that could have added quick a bit of water. Your technique is no doubt good, hard to see exactly what has happened. Maybe you did drop the whole kite and bar? You did avoid a tip wrap, inversion, hourglass, an some bridle fun. At the end you had some water, tips definitely flapped, kite collapse may have been because of water as well.

I will add a quick relaunch on a foil kite will leave tube kiters not aware it even dropped. I would say 2-10seconds. On many occasions I have relaunched while still on plane, even relaunched while still riding a wave a few times.
