Re: Boardbag recommendation

Not sure where you're based, so this may not apply. Local outfit in South Africa does these for a good price (ZAR 2100 = USD 110). Fits 155cm x 48cm board, foil hardware, two kites, bars, pump, wetsuit, harness, other bits and bobs. They do small volumes so can customize for no extra cost. https://i...

Re: Bar for foiling

Just curious why you recommend these only for singleskin kites ? I've been using singleskins since Peak3. I started with the original FS bar. Since I also competed a lot with a hydrofoil, I gradually switched to carbon bars, which I first bought, then started to make myself. In the hydrofoil the sa...

Re: Kitesurfing in Johannesburg

I'm based in Johannesburg (Randburg) and am not aware of any kite schools around here. I've stopped trying to kite at most of the kite-able spots around here (Vaal dam, Bronkhorstspruit, Leeuwpan) years ago and cannot recommend it. The wind is of poor quality and not conducive to learning, that's if...

Re: Noob question: Does board length matter if width is similar?

Does length really matter? Short answer, no, not as much as size does. Most production kiteboards (twintips) come in a range of aspect ratios (length vs width ratio) that will give acceptable performance. Overall size (area) of the board is probably more important for a beginner than aspect ratio. I...

Re: DIY bar with inverted QR

Along the same lines as the screwdriver QR, but slightly more upmarket.. I present the modified Cabrinha leash QR. Really the only modification is replacing the original dyneema line with a looped line so I could easily attach it to my harness D-ring, and avoid metal-to-metal contact. https://youtu....

Re: Kite style for gusty conditions

I've used a BRM Cloud 17 for gusty inland conditions for the last few years. For me it's perfect for the 12kn-16kn range we get here, with gusts up to 25kn, and lulls down to 8kn. I use a long throw bar which gives instant access to massive depower during gusts. Oh, and this is for twintip use. So m...

Re: In shape3d or akushaper free version, can I calculate optimum fin size and placement?

Optimum for what?
Control? move it closer to the center of effort.
Stability? move it further away from the center of effort.
Deep water? High aspect ratio (long and thin) fins are more efficient.
Shallow water? Low profile (short and fat) fins.
etc..

DIY bar with inverted QR

I've been fiddling with my control bar, and decided to attach the front lines directly to the chicken loop..

Re: Crashing backwards on waist harness

Another option might be to wear an impact vest.
My impact vest covers the top of my seat harness.

This is also a great way to self-land a strutless kite
