Steamboat Lake is definitely great but not that many days with good wind in winter. So that's why everybody says rabbit ears... You can find some wind up there even if it is dead in the valley.

It's pretty steep on both sides. East side is more open. Don't know what's the typical wind up there, but almost everytime I was there the wind went up from both sides (even when forecast was W) :) So this spot worked for me 39.662601,-105.887532 you can go from the pass or from that turn down there...

no hiking --> Vail pass, Loveland pass - you can find some good wind up there almost every day... But you can fly everywhere above treeline :) tenmile range,... and it's great down there around mt Democrat and Kite lake (better for spring when u can drive all the way up :) ) BTW Steamboat lake looks...

btw you can find some used split board too for good price I guess (maybe more likely in Europe),... They used to have some troubles - ice in bindings and those 'connection points' so it was tricky to put that board back to one piece up there But now it looks better
