How many foilers worldwide? And what %age of all riders do they represent?
~300 +/- 100 ; ~<0.1%
Reference : this thread
You're missing at least one decimal place in that figure. Considering there's 40+ entries in the race this week in SF.

Everyone foils in San Francisco, even the windsurfers.

Re: kiteboarding santa barbara

The SB crew is great, always friendly and stoked out, though I haven't figured how they can afford living in SB and getting out to kite so much... They are all way into foiling, and rightfully so because the wind can be light at Ledbetter. Last time I was there they were all riding the groundswell u...

Re: Back to the roots of hydrofoiling ?

For a time there was only the Carafino and Rush Randle I think. I believe one of the catalysts for Taaroa becoming a thing was a disagreement over their arrangement for selling Carafino's in Europe. He could have been hyrdofoiling's cabrinha or naish but for his personality and practices. I tried ha...

Re: Sea conditions you'd give up foiling and oppt TT or surfboard

Water depth and seaweed are the only things stopping you. If the wind vs. your kite size is manageable on a TT then you can manage it on a foil, maybe you need shorter lines and some getting used to, but it's doable. That said, if there's enough wind to blaze around in the flat water butter, twin ti...

Re: First fatal accident in our local beginner Bay Area beach

I agree, knotwindy, that complete one-handed kite control is a mandatory, but too often high-level kiters with these skills will downplay or even overlook glaring life-threatening risks at a launch because they have mastered these skills, but that isn't reality for beginning kiters. For example, th...

Re: Zeeko Spitfire Hydrofoil

Does anyone know if this would be a good foil to learn on? I need a foil to learn and then freeride in the light winds of San Diego... I like the idea of a canard for learning, because it may help with the "porpoising", since when the front wing breaks the surface and loses lift the whole setup sho...

Re: Mike's Lab foils

I know the SF crew of foilers (racers anyway) seem to be pretty stoked on the Mike's foil and board. That's a pretty serious crew. I don't think Mike has a factory full of Oompa Loompas churning these out either. I think they are all more or less one-offs with design tweaks in each one. So if you ar...
