God that sucks. Not just in terms of it being at your local kite spot but just in general terms of being a water lover. Hope it gets cleaned up quickly with minimal eco impact.

Squamish is incredibly beautiful with snow capped mountains all around and a wildlife estuary just downwind. And it is perfect for kitesurfing, steady wind, flat water, etc. For this to happen is a tragedy and for this to happen in the middle of our best kiting seasons is a disaster for Vancouver area kitesurfing. We will probably not be kiting there again for quite a while (the oil spill was big, several hundred meters wide slick of bunker oil).
Ugghhhh.
Well, I have to go now and try to wipe more oil stains off myself (where did I put that paint thinner..).

The first shots of the beach are coming in this morning. We are blocked from getting to the beach from the police and clean up crew. This was taking off our webcam.
You can check out the webcam directly to see the cleanup and oil slick

Things are proceeding very slowly regarding cleanup - the authorities and news agencies are reacting painfully slow.

Smallish looking crews are on the shore and water now, 20 hours later
There are many volunteers waiting on the side line for a thumbs up from the contractor. We hope to get out there tomorrow to help out! What a sad sad event!

This a great tragedy for our community in Squamish. For those that have had the opportunity to look at our webcam that entire area when you pan to the right is bird estuary. As a windsurf/kite community for years have dealt with the estuary society about the recreational use of these waters.
To put it into the scope of Kiters. This is a long weekend saturday with temperatures between 23-28 degrees. PERFECT...TEXTBOOK...Squamish kiting day.
Over the course of today we would expect to see anywhere from 30-50 kiters. (which can be seen daily on the cam)
As of now we are all sitting at our computers watching our summer go down the drain.
