How much rocker in a 130cm twin tip???

Postby dt » Mon May 28, 2007 10:06 pm

I am building a new 130 cm twin tip for jumping. How much rocker should it have? It will be for good powered up kiting on kites that are 9m to 13.5m. In the past I have liked my boards with about 3.8cm of rocker but I am wondering if most people like less rocker because they are faster. I weigh 175lbs = 80kg so I will be able to handle a fair amount of speed and power with the 130 cm board.

its a personal prefferance thing and also depends on the way you ride and local conditions

trial and error :bye:

I agree with Kev. If pressed I would say 1" (2.54 cm) should be sufficient for all but wave riding. If your board has flexi tips and you are riding flat water and small chop then 2 cm would be better. Flatter can mean more speed. More speed = higher boost. Don't forget that wide tips are best for boosting because when you load up they don't sink in as much and give you more power for lift off.

Ed257 - Thanks for the input. I will give it 2cm of rocker and see how that goes. That is 30% less rocker than my previous jump board so it should be noticably faster.

The tips are 26cm wide on this 39cm max width board. I planned for the tips to be wider but, oops.

Lirik - Your boards have a lot of rocker. It has been my experience that over 4cm can make wave riding a little better but it makes boards substantially slower and harder to get upwind.

My 2006 WLF 140 has about 3.5CM of Rocker. I think it is a little too much, the board is slow, but comfortable in bigger wind. It does not jump easily for me (160lbs) since it is stiff and wide (46CM).

My 2007 666 132 has about 2.75CM of rocker. I think this is excellent. It planes fast and rides fast. The board speed helps to gain apparent wind power from the kite. The board has wide tips and just enough flex. It Pops HUGE and likes to jump Big.

I think 2.5CM +- .25CM is ideal for a good all around jumping board. A board with more flex may be able to get away with 2CM due to the induced rocker under pressure.
Just my $.02,
Ken
