Best Cities to Live in for Kiteboarding

Postby KevinD » Sat Dec 08, 2007 2:03 am

I want everybody's opinion on the best places to live for kiteboarding.
Here's the criteria of a location I am looking for. Has to meet ALL or most criteria!

1) Has to be in USA
2) Has to have a fairly large city with many office/corporate job opportunities and other things that come with cities like nightlife etc. This city should be within 30 min drive from location.
3) Ability to have a normal office job/life with family (Ex. Maui wounldn't qualify)
3) Consistent Year round wind of 15 mph or higher for 70%-90% of the days.
4) Generally, good, WARM weather all year long (so San Francisco is out)
5) If possible, the kitebeach should be on the beach itself so there are good waves to jump (not in a flat bay)

Let me know what you guys think...
maybe include pictures so we can all see...

A similar discussion follows.
I picked Corpus, but many didn't think it was large enough.
I was just checking out Corpus real estate 3 hours ago and am strongly considering moving.

Sorry, but in the US the only kiteable location with at least 15 mph 70-90% of the days is Maui, period, the end. Nothing else even comes close.

For example, Key West is one of the better places for wind in the US, and for the 8 BEST months, you have about a 50% chance of wind.

See chart here:

http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/win ... y_west.htm#

If you want to see what the wind average is like in a lot of US places, check here:

I would love to find a city with your criteria, but the only one is Maui. I have lived there, but it is too isolated for me and not an option right now.

If you find a decent city with more windy days and nicer weather than KW (although obviously not a city), I will move there next summer, without question.

greg is right - if there was such a place, we'd all move there. with US winter winds being mostly frontal driven, nowhere can be non-stop wind. you need trades or thermals

here's the corpus stat
http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/win ... ti_nas.htm

as it shows, spring is very reliable, other months have enough good days to feed your addiction, but not every day.

it's a rare place that blows nearly non-stop.

you can't have it all!

my advice
-get a job with flexible hours so you can leave when it blows
-make enough $$ so you can visit the many awesome spots around the world.

I live in Corpus and if you consider over 15 as kiteable you would be happy here. I got 4-5 days per week during June and July on a 12m with consistent 15-25 mph. Spring is insane. Fall is decent with 2-3 days a week kiteable and Winter is decent with insane wind when a front blows through. Not a lot of career opportunities I'm sorry to say and the real estate is decieving as the property taxes are extremely high. For example I paid 159,000 for my house and I owe $4,000 for property tax this year. It's still not a bad place to live though and people are friendly.

Wouldn't Portland be a good option, if not the best. My opinion only I guess.

45min to the Gorge.
Access to the whole Oregon coast.

What !!!! € 110.000.- for a house ? I live 1 hr away from a half way decent city here in the south of Spain and I own a attached house, 120 sqm , small garden ,no build in heating and it cost € 450.000.- which means in USD 660.000.-

In my neighborhood there is a double garage for sale for € 95.000.-

I feel NOW so depressed
