Kiting in Queensland OZ.... tips?

Postby anbeca » Mon Mar 17, 2008 4:03 pm

Going to Queensland for a couple of days... May 2 - 10

Plan for now.. Fraser Island and Whitsundays....

Found some info on whitehaven, but not much on Fraser area...

Any tips on spots?...

Any other good spots on the area?

Thanks.

Fraser is probably the sharkiest spot in Queensland! I would only kit close to the beach there.

You can try Hervey Bay for some excellent flat water, in front of Rainbow beach in small chop and surf, or inskip point between Fraser and Rainbow Beach. You can pretty much kite any where, but remeber Fraser is known for sharks - especially the further north you head like Indan head and Waddy point.

Heaps of spots around on the mainland to try though. Sunshine Coast being about 1 hour south.

Just returned from the Sunshine Coast.
Spend there the whole month of february...almost did no kiting at all...
Had rubbish weather but check Maroochydore, is kinda nice.
If you can go to W.A., they'll never see me in QLD again when it comes to kiting.. :nono:

Go to Western Australia instead?

Seriously, Qld. can be good but get good local advice about marine hazards (cone shells, sharks, stingers (jellyfish)) first. Not trying to put you off but like anywhere, local knowledge is important.

I have sailed there (Whitsundays) ... best sailing I have done in my life easily.

Rainbow Beach (inskip point) is my local kite spot, its a great kiting location has every wind direction covered flat water or surf, inskip point re Kurts photo above or on the other side of the point where the barges are there is a sandbar island that gives flat water in any wind direction, lots of rays and seacows but less sharky. No jellyfish to worry about in these waters. The first half of summer was lacking wind but since then almost everyday has been kiteable.
