camera mount on lines -- opinions before i kill myself/kite

Postby andydimitri » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:06 am

Hey

Just thought i'd get some opinions before i attempt this. Wouldn't want to injure myself or god-forbid my kite :-? -- (Eclipse thruster :thumb: )

I have the Oregon ATC2000 video camera and mounting it on the LE looks pretty crappy (screen shot):

Image

So inspired by this video: http://www.kiteworld.tv/martyn-hogg-on-the-atc2k/2/ (same camera)

I decided to rig up my own camera mount (camera attaches on the clip)

about 2 meters above the bar

This is the bare bones. I'm planning on adding padding around the metal base .. its a hunk of metal that i wouldn't want flying into my face. Also, the 2 loops on the bottom would be tighter and more compact. I'll also make sure there's nothing sharp rubbing against the lines.

Some concerns:

1) the line snapping at the top of the base

2) lines crossing (i.e. back roll...) and getting caught at the base of the camera making the kite loop. I figure I'll wrap the the camera and base so there's nothing for it to catch.

I can't see this affecting the way the kite flies too much. -- maybe more depowered?

I'm heading to Cabarete in 2 weeks and thought it be nice to have this set up for my trip.

Do you think I'm totally off on this? Or that it's totally dangerous?

Cheers

andrew

well first off, to support your idea here I would recommend weighing the rig itself. then run your lines out (no kite) and see how much it sags to get a glimpse of the [possible] depower factor that could make your session a regret. if not much is pulling down on your lines then maybe give it a go----TEST FLY FIRST!!!----

to list the possible dangers of your rig you plan on using, and looks like, it would be something that would keep my attention away from actually enjoying a session and being paranoid about the camera falling, slipping, or "am i getting a good picture HBBe54pih????!", etc. insted. personally I dont approve of anything with solid weight being attatched or dangling from my kite. if your too concious then just stick to memories insted of video, don't put yourself in risk by being too 'iffy' about it. I know we all wish we had a camera there to prove we saw a ufo, etc. but if you find a solution then safe-test it first before you rip out there.

How about a shot of the final, padded, streamlined version of the camera setup?

Nice footage!

I personnaly highly recommand www.camrig.com
safe, realible, easy to use.
But you need to buy the proper camera.

well .. i wouldn't really call it "streamlined". I basically just added padding (from local hardware store; the kind you use to line doors/windows) around the entire base, and duct taped it!

Image

the extra line is used to attached the camera to the swivel (where the front lines meet). I did this so if my lines did break i wouldn't loose the camera.

The camrig looks really good -- in retrospect i might gone this route, but I already had this camera lying around.

cheers

I like the shot from the camera on the LE.. in fact, if i were to put a camera on my kite, i think that is where i would want it.

That turned out great. Thanks for the post and link. I have that same camera (got it for father's day, and have yet to capture any kitesurfing footage). Thanks for the motivation.

hey omar .. thats you! -- nice

note .. turns out that if you place the camera 2 meters above the bar it ends up being too close (only head and torso are in the shot). That footage is from about 3.5 meters away, and it would probably be better if it was even a bit further away.

cheers

andrew
