Portugal in September

Postby Bill » Fri Jul 24, 2015 1:00 pm

Anyone been in September? Looking for waves (and wind of course!). Any info on locations, wind reliability for that time of year and conditions much appreciated.

Been there in August up in Esposende north of Porto. Lagoon and wave side. A bit north of there is Viano do Castelo, launch on South side of river. We got wind skunked despite raves about wind.
Beautiful places and nice places to visit anyway.
Guicho, West of Lissabon is the known wave spot, ridden by it on bicycle tour 15 years ago, big beach, can be a lot of people I've heard.
Peniche has wave spots, and area north at Foz Do Arelho has a Lagoon that I saw kiters on in October 2 years ago. There's also huge beach with beach break.
South in Algarve there are good spots near Lagos and other spots. I have not been there yet.
You have to make sure places you go don't have too many people.
On that bike tour we rode pretty much whole coast from Lissabon to Porto. There were spots with endless beaches with good sized beach break, wind and not a soul on them.
Portugal is a nice country. Simple, a bit rustic, nice people that understand the basic things in life matter.
Seems like parts of it are like California was supposed to be like in 1930.
Check Splocs.

The only spots with really reliable wind are Viano do Castello and Guincho due to specific topography with respective thermal winds starting early afteroon. Guincho has open ocean swell and the beach is NOT wide (rocks / cliffs on both sides of the beach), you have to know what you´re doing.
Plenty of other spots, but all way less reliable concerning the wind.

Have been last year mid-September to mid-October around Lisbon area. 4 days riding out of 30 days. Some days too strong wind and too big waves on Guincho (good advice is to try some other spots, that work well).

Lots of days with good swell with no wind, so prepare to enjoy surfing.

September is when wind calms down here in Portugal (although there are exceptions with epic sessions).
See you!
