Oh my gosh... just got the Ultimate delivered and that thing is massive. You could harpoon whales with it! (not that I would ever approve of that). It's overkill for my 18' skiff, but for peace of mind bigger is probably better, especially if it's blowing 25-30 or whatever.

I came across this somewhat old thread when searching for something else. Update: I exchanged the huge ultimate sandshark for the smaller version (HD?). It works great, has plenty of holding power, and fits nicely in my bow locker. I had them slightly customize it by using a removable pin between the pieces instead of the permanent pin, but soon realized I didn't really need to take it apart. Anyhow, I like it and use it just for the boat. However, looking at their website it looks like they've redesigned the anchors and my version isn't offered anymore. One issue I have with it is the crappy spring clip on the end of the line. That clearly is a freshwater grade piece of hardware and mine has rusted etc.
For the kite I use the anchor from kiteanchor.com
A couple of pics of the sandshark in action...

I bought this one from NZ as there were no decent ones on AUS. It works very well. The auger holds in the sand well. I had to adjust connections a little as i have Fireball not a chicken loop. Definitely get this one.

That looks like a really good one too
. I prefer a longer one though so I can use it in shallow water and also in soft deep sand.

I can put 300 pounds of sand in my bag in 2 minutes and it was $30 all in. I really like the idea that if the pull is too large the bag just slowly drags instead of losing your kite after a failure to hold. I believe the filled bag is the way to go
I am looking for a suitable bag. May be you could post a link to one you are using? Is it effectively a big sports bag? Do you simply attach your kite to bag's handles (strong enough?) or have some better arrangement?
How big the bag should be in cm /inches or litres?
Ta!

Ikea shopping bag. Its easy to make a bag work well if you dig a little hole, put the bag in it and replace the sand. the force on the line has to pull a the sand up and out of the hole.

Thanks Rusty,
1)So - do you not fill the bag with sand at all?
Just bury it?
Is the idea that in worst case (kite powers up) you have an empty bag-so effectively just the bar on the end of the lines? Is it safer this way?
2)Do you just connect ( a spare?) leash to the IKEA bag's handles? And other end to chicken loop? Are handles strong enough?
Thanks again

Yes, you fill the bag with sand.
I always have a little length of tubular webbing and a climbing carabiner with me at the beach. the webbing works great for attaching to fixed objects. To be honest I've never used an Ikea bag, but have used a kite compression sack many times. An Ikea bag is cheaper and stronger. It really doesn't have to be bomb proof. The other trick/measure of safety is to run your hand down one of the center lines as you run from kite to bar or vice versa. Don't pull on it, but if the kite misbehaves you can haul on the single line and essentially flag the kite.

That plastic screw is really strong enough to tether a kite? If yes that's a great option. Light, cheap and I could bring it on trips.
