In Cocoa Beach Florida, we have 2 kite shops. Literally across the street from each other. The owners and staff at 321 Kiteboarding have always gotten along with and supported our friend and competitor. This tight relationship was evident today when I received a text from the owner of GoodBreeze kiteboarding letting me know that he had been broken into the day after Christmas. I quickly informed the staff and instructors of the incident so they could keep an eye out.

As fate would have it, as I was at our famous 520 Slick riding/teaching location, 2 guys pull up asking if I wanted to look at a kite they had. The rest is history. 1 recovered kite, 1 person in custody. Kite community 1 vs. Crime 0
What kind of stupid thief stories do you have from your local spots?

Good stuff!
Back home, someone had a board ripped off, but it was spotted a week later at a "garage sale".
Police were called and they got the board back, but nobody in custody.

A guy I know at Cape Hatteras posted here a couple years ago how he left a kite inflated on the beach for a while, and someone came by and packed it up and took off with it. Noone else noticed as the behavior seemed normal. Never recovered it.

That's the way to go. In Brazil we are noticing an increase in stolen kites, as the criminals discovered the value of the gear. Is up to ourselves to keep the community informed and try to get the most information that we can about sellers of used gear before buy it!

Nice work, Ramon. I'm glad the guy was arrested.
Yes, thieves are morons. A few years ago, my SUV was burglarized with several thousand dollars of kite equipment in the back. The thieves stole a $50 iPod shuffle and some pocket change from the center console, but left all the kite gear in back.
In another incident, my triathlon bike (secured out of sight in a travel box) was stolen from a rental SUV. The thieves took my carbon race wheels, but left the skewers necessary to mount the wheels on the bike.
