Help me jump strapless :)

Postby kiteswede » Tue Jan 15, 2019 10:45 am

Hi all

I dont really succeed when I try to jump with strapless board 5.3 feet.

I try to do as this video, but the board does not leave water level. If I use a small wave it will jump a little. I have tried faster speed but dont se much difference and I also push the back of the board down, and try to put the board upwind, but it doesnt get any help from the wind to raise higher.

Can somebody describe how you jump? Or maybe what made you jump easier :) or how you broke the code ;)

I am still getting the hang of it as well, so take my tip with a grain of salt...

Notice how Airton moves his kite to around twelve, and pulls on the bar? For me, that's been the key...you need to make yourself weightless.

It's not only about the board.

Good luck, have fun.

Need some lift and the board will follow with the ollie, and good wind under the board will help a lot.

For me the kite pulling and hence being weightless only starts to play a role in bigger/higher jumps.

The small ollie works in a similar fashion as you would take off behind a cable at the wakepark. If you have waves to use as a kicker it gets easier, but you may not be doing an ollie but jumping off a kicker. Also very fun, but different.

Speed of the board is important. You don't want to go full speed, but something in the middle to start.

For the part that the wind pushes the board onto your feet, I find that this really starts to work at 25+ knots and higher jumps. Before that the effect is not very strong.

Keep practicing. Start small and point the board downwind for landing.

In what kind of winds do you ride? It gets A LOT easier to get the board off the water and to keep it on your feet when there is good wind.

Tons of practice and fails.

What helps a lot:

Lighter surf boards
Strong clean wind (youll have a bad time in gusty or light winds...)
Kickers <<<< this plus some nuking wind really get the feeling dialed in.
wide stance
Loosened up and let go of one of your hands. When I started the front, now im more comfortable with the back.
Smaller fins seems to help :thumb:

I like kikers but now only in flat water spot
Takes me months to learn to jump few meters in flat water. Need to train a lot . i agree on smaller fins and lighter board(broke easy...). And short.5/ 5.2" usually
