What 14-15m kite feels most like a small kite? Lightness, turning speed, but still has power for LW?

Postby omg » Fri Jan 18, 2019 8:00 am

Damn, I am still in search of a LEI kite which does start to work in 10-13 knots for surfboard tricks and without feeling like a tank when the wind picks up a bit, say to 17-18 knots or so during a session.

May be this is an impossible combination, but I would like to hear if I am missing out some good choices, please? For me it's really hard to test them unfortunately but I would appreciate if you could give me some points of recommendations.

I have been thinking about 1, 3 and even 5 struts like Ozone Zephyr. I currently have 2019 Boxer 12m, but I need a more powerful = bigger kite. I think what matters in lightwinds is the turning speed which partly equals to the kite weight. However, I am not convinced that the 1-strut kites handle that well when the wind picks up; for twin tips they do, but for strapless surfboards they don't behave that well anymore...?

Any feedback appreciated!

I think maybe you need to try a one stut or no strut kite. They will be light an turn least like a tank.
But, A fast turning tank is still a tank!

If you want to go small in light winds then you need to change the board to a hydrofoil. Then you can take your 8m that you love and zip around in 10 knots.

A 12m Cabrinha switchblade with 6m line extensions will get you going in almost nothing. (30m lines in total)

I love the Zephyr, but compared to a 12 it is obviously slow. And not sure how well it works with a surfboard? In flat water no problem, but for more fine tuned riding in waves.... I certainly wouldn't have the skills to ride well under such condition with the Zephyr. When it pulls it really pulls - which can be controlled with a TT, but probably more difficult on a surfboard. I'm guessing less fun at least.

Not sure what has happened in that segment. When I bought my Zephyr it had (and I believe still has) a very good reputation for a big kite. I love riding it, but then rather with a TT at 17 knots. Then you can have a lot of fun under conditions that would be boring with a smaller kite.

I have a 14m rally, hardly used. My 12 covers nearly everything.

"What 14-15m kite feels most like a small kite?" none of them.
"May be this is an impossible combination..." yes, it is.

The Airush union 14m may fit the bill. Light but strong build and relatively nimble for a 14m. If I bothered to have a kite that big that would be the one. All other big kites I’ve flown feel large and lethargic.
