Core XR4 17 m2 versus Ozone Zephir

Postby Stef2013 » Wed May 17, 2017 12:45 am

Hi guys, I currently ride with a Core XR4 13,5 (great hang time) but I would like to take also a larger sail (17 m2) in order to pursue my progression to big air. I'm 175 cm X 78 kg and wish to find the best kite for high jumps. I'll appreciate any suggestions and comments related to the 2 models above (both are LW kites but I would use them at around 20 knt) ....or others. Thanks

Hi,

I sell both Ozone and Core. If you want big air, then you do not want the Zephyr. It's more of a freestyle kite for light winds. For big air, you want the Edge. The new EdgeV9 has gone back to a more solid freeride boosting design is amazing for boosting. The 17m Xr4 is also a good option, however is not as good a booster as the Edge , especially in 20 knots where the Edges static bridle without pulleys keeps it from deforming, whereas the XR4 will start to deform when you push it into that windrange.

Hmm is it worth it? Got the 13,5m, and would not bother to buy a 17 for a tiny tad more low end and hangtime....

Thx a lot for all the replies guys. I'm quite ok with my 13,5, but having in mind to increase the height and hangtime of my jumps to improve my oldschool tricks, I decided to follow the suggestions of Toby and go for a larger kite and understand the Edge is the gold standard. As regards the size, I thought 17 m2 would be more appropriate for my weight and height in the 20 knts range.....but perhaps I should try also the 19m2 and see. Then, I should try to put a customized microloop and extra hook on the bar and chcken loop, as I think the one of the old north doesn't fit for Core or Ozone models.......

Zephyr has great wind range but height and hangtime are not it's best qualities.
If you live in a gusty area where the wind can range from 8 to 22 kts during the session then Zephyr should be your choice
otherwise, like other said, Edge or XR..

Don't expect higher jumps than with your 13.
But more hang time and softer landings.
Combined with more control in the air with less harder crashes specially when it comes to rotating tricks.

With your weight I assume a 17 will give you a wider range.

But, if you can, test sizes 17-19 and see what works best for you!

The xr5's are out now and have an improved airframe stiffness according to the specs. A friend rode his 8m xr4 and xr4 back to back and said you can feel the new one is more solid.

What did you get and how was it? Did you go for the edge in the end?
