Using a cheap secondhand wake skate for my build.
Do you have any prior experience? or are you planning on learning with that set up?
I tried to start with a foil and skate and got totally humbled. Mounted the foil to a surfboard and still needed the front strap to get a handle on the basics. Only switched back to a minimal board once I started working on transitions. Now I much prefer the feel of a tiny board, but it was much easier to learn the first few skills with some foam and nose rocker.

Yes, thinking the same - are you "new" to hydrofoiling socommk23 ?
As such a board is extremely difficult to ride/learn on (almost impossible) - eventhough you can ride these pretty easy when you have loads of experience yes

Yup new to the foil side. I have no illusions about the learning curve of the sport. But i like a challenge. The whole setup and build cost me less than £100. So ill give it a go. If it doesnt work out ive not lost much if anything. Its been good fun building and learning to build with wood, glass and carbonfibre. If i feel the absolute need to foil then maybe ill invest in an off the shelf item if/when this route fails.

Aaaah, okay.
I trust your building skills - it is just the "route" with a minimal sized board many experienced even stay away from, that might make it "difficult" to learn

Indeed. I can always get a bigger board if it doesnt work out.

Analogy:
Like learning to surf in barreling surf.
Walk first, then run.

No different to me learning on my mutant. Do it. It's possible.

And that's all it takes to float a piece of wood eh? I'll see what I can do
That's working well for mine with an alloy foil.
The one pictured above is wood core so likely won't require as much flotation from the board.
Any tips to finding a good balance point on a random skim board? Or where to get double thick deck pads - you know, from the trash so I can win the competition?

Your mutant has straps (and is slightly bigger)
Way easier than a strapless skim, no comparison
