short lines on tube kites for foiling

Postby butterfish » Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:33 pm

hey

anybody an idea how short i can go with line lenght on lei kite for hydrofoiling? want the most reactive and quick turning kite possible. kite sizes are 12/9/7 - will use the bar on all of the kites in my range. are 16m lines realistic to use on my range? are there big disadvantages of shorter lines?

cheers

16m is no problem, just try it. Give yourself some time on it to get used to it. After a few days you will have a better idea how it works for you.
When I still used tubes I was on 14m most of the time and 10m sometimes.

Now on Hyperlink (foil) I am using mostly 12m, 10m and 7m lines.

Cheers,
Frank

So how’d it go, butterfish?
I chopped my lines tonight to 14m and am splicing a set of 2 and 3 meter extensions. Plan to do some experimenting. I foil with 5.5m, 9m, and 17m LEIs.

I use 27 and 32m race lines ie 100kg x 200kg on strutless 4.8 to 10.4m kites with fast one handed turning. Kite from about 7kn wind.
Long race lines allow a smaller kite for same wind but may break if doing jumps.
When I used strutted kites with heavy lines all were 20m long. It was a big change in my mind set to go to such long lines but well worth it.

I'm on 20m lines. Hyperlink 9-7 and a Sonic2 13. I tried 15 m once in some bad conditions on the Hyperlink 9 and it was too different.
Now that I'm on big wing and flying 20m all last season. What's next step down ?
I have a set of 15m.

It is size dependent. If you are on smallest possible kite it wont work. Basicaly you need kite that will pull you without working. So it is not plug and play - you need to dial also kite size

Get a set of short lines and a set of extensions. 16m+5m would probably cover every wind condition those 3 kites can handle other than extreme low-end groveling in light wind.

So what's the advantage of using super short lines?

Whilst on holiday for a few months I made a set of 18 MTR lines and planned to use them, felt fine on the beach😎 but felt far to weird when on the water, lost all my timing, nightmare, after a short while I came back in really hating the lines and fed up wasting so much time making up the lines and getting so frustrated on the water,
It was so good to get back out on my 24mtr lines,I went loop crazy for a while to celebrate getting my rhythm back.
I aim to try them again if I get bored or have good reason to, or maybe not.

After trying different lengths, I have settled on 23 meters for wave riding and 27 for just casual low-wind cruising around.
