Bar without Trim adjustment

Postby geokite » Tue Oct 02, 2018 11:24 pm

I'm considering putting a bar together for a foil kite, but without a trim adjustment. I'm thinking foil kites don't really need them; if the trim is pulled in, steering is reduced and the ability to backstall is reduced/eliminated (which could lead to the kite overflying). In my case this would also simplify my flagout line (no need for bungee in the flag line to take up the slack when the trim is pulled in)

The bar would still have depower, just no trim adjustment, and would only be used for foil kites (9 and 12m FRS). Thoughts requested, thanks.

I'm using a trim-free bar with my Soul 10m, and it works well. I have 70cm of throw available on the bar, and it seems more than I need for the Soul.

There are a couple of historical posts on the forum about trimless bars. You could probably do a search for them.
I've been using a trimless long throw depower setup for the last few years. It works for me, but I use LEI kites.

I’m using the BRM bar for my Cloud kites. 70cm of depower line. Works well

Use a bar I madewith no trim on Ozone Hyperlink 7 and 9 m. Mostly i use a Ozone bar with trim.
There's not a huge difference. I rig the kite on rear line knots according to the wind which is a bit tricky because you have to estimate on beach. On bar with trim, I'll do that once on the water by feel and leave it.
If the wind increases or decreases, say an average increase or decrease of 2-3ms ( 4knots) then kite is not optimally trimmed. Happens sometimes.
So if you have consistent winds during any one session, you don't really need a trim on Hyperlinks I use.
On my sonic 2 13m, I want trim because only a few knots more wind and it creates a ton of power and depower trim has big effect and kite flys great on big range of trim.

I'm Hydrofoiling.

Foil kites have so much wind range, I feel like a trimless bar would really limit how and when you can use your kite. Not to say it wouldn't be nice and clean, but having the ability to change line lengths on the fly while riding is a big multiplier, especially with a hydrofoil.

I agree. But you can do this on the beach with knots, if the wind is consistent during the session

For sure, although there are definitely upwind points of sail where I go from fully trimmed to almost entirely untrimmed, more of a posture/back pain thing to be able to keep my spine neutral and not need to rely on poo stance. Just me, I've got a goofy low back so I'm willing to deal with the floppy trimmer line in my face and would be bummed to lose the flexibility.
