I am really enjoying my Garmin Virb. Its waterproof to 1m, so no case needed for kiting. You can also purchase a dive case for it to go deeper. The standard version records 1080p video, the elite version tracks gps for speed, altitude, etc and pairs with things like heartrate sensors. Comes with a universal adapter to fit most mounts (including all gopro mounts) Ive rigged it to a camrig line mount and strut mount with no issues.

Polaroid is also coming out with it "Cube". Very small 1080p video recorder and has a wide array of mounts available already. Looks interesting but may not fit your bill.
The Drift Ghost HD is on my wish list. Its the only one I have come across with constant buffering. By which it keeps the last 30 seconds in memory and can record the action after the fact when you press record.
This means you only record the good stuff and you don't have to edit through 2 hours of footage for the 2 minutes you actually want.
GoPro-s are not cheap and they're not perfect but there are quite a few reasons why they have 80% of the point-of-view market...and one of reasons is they capture incredible footage and are easy to edit and share.
Look on your local craigslist...you can get a Silver Hero3+ for $150-$200 vs. $300+tax at a store.
