When she says go deeper but you're all out of tension

Postby Lokihel » Sun Sep 02, 2018 1:48 pm

I'm talking mostly to freeriders here, as the racers will unanimously say I should use two sizes bigger. I am not using race kites, or a race hydrofoil.

What do you do when you're out on a 'relaxed' cruise, and the wind drops a little more than you would like. As a result, you have less power from the kite (you weren't overpowered to start with), and you are now trying to head back downwind as quickly as possible before the wind drops too much.
The problem is that because you are somewhat lacking power, it is more difficult to run deep downwind.

What I find is that if I keep the kite low, it is a lot more affected by gusts and will occasionally stall. With the kite high, it doesn't work as well.
Should I keep the kite reasonably low and sheet out to prevent stalling but run as deep as possible, or should I actually be sheeting in hard and try to keep tension by not running as deep?

Always get more out of a kite flying it. For downwind I like continuous loops, big sines, etc.

big sines - make S turns- go downwind on kites upstrokes and tension lines little bit to downstrokes

Work the kite as said, and/or keep it high and never low when lightly powered - and keep the speed up :thumb:

Why do you ascribe a female gender to your kite and talk dirty to it?

I'm looking for a more 'steady state' solution as I can have up to 4km to do on a single reach.
Keep the kite high and see how deep I can go downwind without losing power?

Is your kite a male gender? :?:
No dirty talking here, just talking about line tension and running deep downwind.

Yes, keep the kite high about 45 degree so you get lift and can foil in less wind and even deeper, and keep the speed up.

Just keep the kite steady if you prefer that, a lot more relaxed yes, you will be able to go quite deep when you find the "perfect point" where you got sufficient speed to keep lines tight even when going deep and no bigger risk of losing your foiling state.

If it gets even less wind so you can not foil, and/or you get down by accident, stand on the middle of the board and loop the kite two times both ways till you reach the shore, if possible.
Knowing that if you drop yourself in the water, you probably can not waterstart anymore and have to do the same double loops with one arm around the board, the other on the bar, changing side for every second loop.
I do that when it drops to 3-5 knots when out with my 12 m2 LEI and I want to get ashore, so very rare I get a wet kite
