Extreme Kitesurf Accidents

Postby Toby » Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:30 pm

Kitesurf is a very fun sport, but it can turn bad real quickly, so if dont know what youre doing, always have an instructor before trying it..

And when you watch, and see clearly experienced kiters, showboating and lets say
" misjudging " then crashing and burning
on shore, putting bystanders at risk....
Where's the lesson....hopefully it's a lesson learned.
Do your trick....with ample room for when it goes wrong...

Good that you didn't hurt anyone or yourself.

There’s a lot of Darwin at work in some of those screw ups. You know, selection.
.
Then there are the ones when your number has been chosen by the committee.
The committee that resides in the outermost galaxies.
Thor, Spartacus, Rubber man, etc.
Then you just eat it.

In my case bystanders were upwind, never at risk.

Ouch!! Things do go wrong sometimes and this is shows what happens and can be a lesson to others to be aware of the dangers that can occur! Good to see you put one of yourself in shows this can happen to anyone even highly experienced kiters.

The story is following:

we filmed many days at the same spot at the the same time.

Wind direction was always the same.

But, on that day the wind didn't turn yet...and I didn't do a test jump...because it all was the same...
Since it didn't turn, the wind took me towards the beach...normally it takes me into deep water...
That's why I crashed on the beach...but luckily I use my 18 sqm kite...which means the kite brings me down soft...in this case too...I hurt my foot a bit, had pain for a week...but with a smaller kite I am sure it would have been worse.

I just dragged out of the picture, but then I stopped a bit further...all under control.

Lesson learned: even if you think it is all the same...do test jumps before you gor for it...a few degrees difference can be enough to crash like that.

And I am not alone...a friend of mine told me he had the same experience...same spot ;-)

But some other crashes on this video look really bad...specially the one on the rocks...hopefully all of them made it just fine.

You are not lucky with using 18m kite.

You are lucky that you *physically* can. I can't. No 50-60kg rider can in this wind ;) You know the rest...

Toby's accident doesn't belong in an "Extreme compilation" more like "I twisted my ankle compilation"
