I windsurfed for 20 years before kiteboarding. It doesn't relate at all, other than knowing which way the wind is coming from. Wakeboarding is closer.
Take everyones advice....get a lesson.....or you may injure youself or others. You will learn much faster also.

in many ways i think windsurfing may actually hold you back.
going upwind and waterstarting were my main problems I put down to bad habits from windsurfing. mainly due to a lack of fin
aaa screw it too early in the morning for thinking

I windsurfed 17 yrs, gave that up and been kiting 7years..
I started on a directional, as that was pretty much all there was about then.. and that is a reasonable start point for an ex pole surfer, but for some there are unecessary difficulties with a directional, but to an ex poley, they are joys...such as hard fast gybing..whereas a TT you can cheat and just go the other way.
If you've done any wakeboarding, that is a real help, as you will already be aware of heel/toe pressure issues... if not, just think of the differences between carving upwind with heel pressure for a short board tack or toe pressure on initiating a bottom turn.. that's basically the difference
lessons are a good starter, 7 years ago, there were no lessons and far fewer kiters, at Hayling there was one.. me, now every weekend there will be at least 30 guys out, so lessons are important, for a safety grounding, etc... as there are very few beaches that are empty and chances are any accident could/will injure other beach users.
My advice is to find a few riders who know what they are on about, are experienced/sensible and gleen knoweldge/techniques off them in cnjunction with lessons.... ride safe

I'm a 19 year windsurfer, would be a 20 year except no windsurfing now for about a year.
I tried to learn on my own with a 2 line kite and a video about 4 years ago. Made little progress for about a year, then I took a lesson and it all came together. Turn's out my instructor had never windsurfed and pointed out all sorts of windsurfing stuff that I was trying to do with the kite. There is no doubt about it, lessons help you get going much much faster!
If you can't get instruction where you are I would recommend getting a little 4 line kite (2 or 3 meters) and practice with it in very light winds getting used to the harness/chicken loop and safety systems. I know that Best makes a 3 meter and I think Naish makes a little kite?
