Hey I really want to try a skimboard but you you never see them on Maui. Can anyone give me some advice on what type of skim to use... or if they work very well in choppier water?
Thanks

get a real skimboard, not a kite specific one. you will get a better board for your money and you don't want fins. check out zap and victoria, i use a slotstik custom:
http://www.slotstik.net/
super fun to start in flat water, but eventually you will have fun in waves and chop.

to add..there are skims that work better underpowered/flatter water, and skims that work better in powered conditions/waves/chop. ~ I'd assume you're after the latter..(narrower nose & more rocker) The difference in the two types of skims is quite noticable, IMHO..
Checkout Losethestraps.com for loads of everything strapless & skim 411.

Make sure you check out Roush skimboards. I bought one last year and have no regrets.

If you're gonna consider the Roush skim's, go with the Surftech produced ones.
Don't even think about ordering a custom throught him. I ordered/paid for mine in Apr'10, and still haven't seen it...
no reply's to my emails either.
Surftech Roush's are good, (Morphius for kiting), but DO NOT give E.Roush your money!!! ~ just wanted to warn you.
Lots of nice boards out there..

Hey, so for Maui it is a little bumpy IMO. If you want a fun finless strapless option try an alaia board. The new Naish board is super fun...I'm sure it is possible to demp it. It is a lot easier to ride in bumps, AND it is possible ride on a wave (albeit not easy).
Ok if you want to ride a skim try the rousch from surftech. It does have a fin option. My only issue with the board, is that I ding it pretty easily.
All this said, I am by no means an expert on skims...but I do have a victoria and a rousch skim board .

If i lived in maui i would get a skate instead. more fun, but doesnt have the light wind ability of the skimboard, which is the only thing id get a skim for really.

fun finless strapless option try an alaia board
like a paipo one or what?
I tried a long 6'9" one and it went upwind like a train but had pearling problem -once that long, wide nose went into the water, "DIVE, DIVE!"
Just curious if there is a knack to using a 6 foot or greater alaia for kiting, only tried it once....
