Opensource Courseboard

Postby Bradn » Sun Jul 15, 2012 11:31 am

Hi Everyone
I was thinking about an open source courseboard project, something that will be just as fast as the top boards
any ideas are welcome
presumably tri fin setup, unless anyone has other ideas ( 3 with 0 cant, and small extra fins with cant to make the lift? ect)
What shape tail would be best?
Rocker?
Slight v?
any designs where cutouts can be used for an advantage? (noticeable difference <30 knots)
ect..

if a very fast design is produced, local board manufacturers can produce, and if they get the tolerance very close, then maybe the 50 boards may not need to be made in 1 factory?, keeps cost down also, only the local manufacturer makes money

extreme and unusual ideas are welcomed, willing to try anything :thumb:

Priority list
1- Outline
2-rocker
3-rails

Cheers
Brad

LOVE this idea BUT I believe IKA is pushing for molded or CNC`d boards to take as much of the hand manipulation (and thus produciton variation) out of the process as possible.

http://internationalkiteboarding.org/in ... Itemid=281

Under board registration scheme.

1. Introduction
IKA Approved Series Production equipment is a mass produced board or board range*, made in a production run (molded or CNC process) of not less than 30 pieces per board in the range. Each board in the range shall be produced using the same building specification.

shipping a CNC`d blank is not terribly economocial for local builders.

Cnc machines from surfboard makers are quite easy to find, for example there are plenty of aku shaper cnc machines, and the aku shaper program takes .brd files, a good way to do this is to use boardcad to design the board, and then open it in aku shaper and print/cut.

does anyone have any knowledge with boardcad, as to why when turning the drawings into a model, everything is rounded?

quick design, similar back to temavento, very small cutouts to make reduce the surface area to the same size as rrd , reduced area in nose, anyone else have ideas? upload to mediafire or post pictures here :D

Back of the board was bugged, and cutouts were meant to be smooth

Which software was used for that? Can you provide IGES or STEP?
Those surfaces don't look clean. Maybe it's just a loose rendering for visualization.

I emailed someone the GB70 board cad designs so they could have it CNC'ed. Don't know if it has been done. I'd say no cutouts and a flat bottom nose to a wide diamond tail. I'm trying to figure out how to make a abs 3d printed mold or maybe core in one of the larger reprap 3d printers. If I can do that then a reproducable board could be made up including inserts and finboxes. Could even be made out of recycled plastic if the filament recycling project works out. They look close. Personal manufacturing #@$! yea.

@Hein, yeah it can do STEP or STL, and yeah it was just a screenshot, not proper render, so the back looked bad and not smooth

@gbleck good luck with the cnc and your recycled plastic project, shouldnt be too hard to cnc

I will remove the cutouts, don't need them unless going >30 knots anyway XD
diamond/rounded is the fastest? there must be another way
