Gap jump, tether, kiteloop and stupid stuff

Postby jeromeL » Wed Aug 09, 2017 4:35 pm

Went for a quick weekend road trip (9h each way) to the outerbanks 2 weeks ago. The drive is so worth it, wind is so clean down there.

How far can you do gap jump?
according to google map that one was about 38m cross wind.
https://youtu.be/2eGOrWrukdw
Was pretty nice to go back to outerbanks after that deathloop fail last year (April) and my first attemps at kiteloop in the real slick!

Here is full video of the 2 kooks 1 kite tether video:
FIY I don't recommend trying it at home! especially the way we did it was stupid, should definitely not dive kite aggressively while being tethered (even to another kiter on board), crazy amount of tension in lines. Equipment will definitively fail so we stopped fooling around pretty quickly.

Cool video, Jerome. Your abs must be made of steel with all that jumping :-)

Nice! Looks like you had fun!

I have measured my self on the landboard at jumping at 36m distance. Obviously way possible to jump a lot further on the water. But it depends on what your jumping as to the risk factor. Jumping something like soggy grass, a stream on a the landboard is pretty low risk. Jumping boulders is a different kettle of fish. Come up short and you start snapping legs!

But hey that's part of the fun! adding the risk factor.

It was great, got solid 3 days of kiting, recorded only 1 afternoon on gopro so it's only a glimpse of the weekend ;)
We did the planet of the Apes downwinder twice and had a lot of fun in those channels. Recognized a lot of stuff from Sam Light, Evan Netsch and Dimitri M. videos.

Gap jump, definitely not max distance but considering I wasn't super powered I am happy I made it ;) Could have used more board speed.
It's pretty safe unless you mess up pop and go into uncontrolled rotation. If I don't think I will make it I usually keep kite back and land with no speed. Though on this one I felt it should work so redirected kite forward aggressively to cover extra distance.
So far I haven't messed up too much. I missed a few sand bars but landed twice on my feet, on grass on my ass but it was flooded and mostly mud;)
Landed in a small dry bush once, happy I had 6mm wetsuit on.
Not too keen on jumping rocks though, I often pop off the grass when I mess up timing so don't want to do same mistake off rocks. Once I jumped a hunter's cabin off an island and was pretty close call when I messed up my pop on the choppy side of island...

Yeah. I only take on boulders when I have solid power and some form of half decent run up. Jumping cabin sounds equally as risky!

such a sick spot! would love to go one day.

For jumping really far, the swinging kite forwards method really works. You can go a seriously long way when you're super lit and you wang the kite forward just before you get to the apex of your jump.

In my 3 years of kiting that's the best kiting destination I have done so far, not super easy to get there but wind and slicks are really nice. If you are on East coast, USA, you should check it out.

For going far, it works to send kite hard and pop early when it's still deep in window so you get yanked sideways and downwind instead of straight up. And redirect kite forward with late loop for extra distance and hangtime.

It's one of the best house, pretty secluded and private driveway ;) There are fun slicks and sliders next to it (though didn't try the sliders, I thought I did enough stupid shit that weekend)

Just booked a house for October but most nice house in that area were gone already.
