Could someone please invent a better way to self land a kite in high wind.

Postby kjorn » Sat Nov 18, 2017 2:51 am

I hate self landing in high wind. 5th line is the best method I've used so far. But even this will leave the kite floating upside down in the air while I try to climb up the fifth line. Line cutting into my soft, girly hands.

4 line flag out, the kite never stays on the floor, it flaps about in the sky 10ms up while I try to wrestle it to the ground. Lines burn through my flesh as I try to haul it in. Or it does that scary looping around and bouncing on the floor a few times.

Let me anticipate the pedants ... blah blah sand bag blah stake in the ground blah. Sometimes I get out of the sea a long way from where I got in. I may get out quickly to avoid a squall and want to land my kite.

How haven't we solved this yet?

Flysurfer Peak Reef Line
Ozone Summit internal reride 5th line

Could a similar concept work with inflatable kites?

My thought is above some wind speed self landing and emergency shut off become more important than water relaunch.

FWIW my deep water relaunch success rate w Ozone Summit open cell foil is 2 for 2 100% I'm trying to save my perfect record by keeping it out of the water.

you have to adjust the 5th line stopper to the right length then the kite will stay on the ground nicely.

Other than that kite buddys work really well for that. Or a ground anchor you put in the ground before you head out.

With 5th line kite (always works with my Rebels, I use this over 35kn wind, I assume works for other kinds of kites too)
1. Lower kite to the ground with tip touching the sand
2. Unhook and hold the chicken loop in your hands
3. While unhooked take a 3 or 4 steps upwind; the kite rotates on its wingtip as you walk upwind
4. Grab the safety leash with one hand, THEN let go of the chicken loop, THEN AT THE SAME TIME RUN upwind a few steps (maybe 5 or 6 steps)
5. The kite flops on its leading edge every time

There's a couple of videos on youtube about it, I cant remember, but you could search for self landing 5th line kite...

IMO the best way to land a kite in crazy wind is dumping it in the water with a hand on the safetyleash release. And if you cant reel it in, well you cant reel it in :-) Somethings just have to be accepted

Maybe some kevlar gloves? Easy enough to carry with, doesn't require you to do anything different from your normal process.

Presumably this has been seen by some? Don’t know the windspeed though.
