Length of leaders on new kites?

Have just got a used Gaastra 16.5, the leaders are about 50cm long.

I have all ways used 3m long leaders so if the kite hit the water nose down, you can pull in the leaders (without fear of cutting hands on flying lines) then release to get the kite to roll on its back, so what is the way to do this with short leaders? Can you swim that fast to the kite to roll it??

what do pepole do when you drop the kite and loose your board at the same time? with out a board leash, as one of the guys lost his board the other day by dropping the kite.
