Jumping off mountains with kites

Postby Dirty Habits » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:01 pm

So I don't know who's seen this jump, it didn't get coverage close to Rubens jump in Norway but it's the same mountain, but this guy jumped off the mountain in 'off shore' (off mountain) wind direction, flew over the hotel, over the main highway, over the train track and over the powerlines. pretty mental if you ask me, considering kite gear isn't tested for flying like that's it's truely insane, check the video of his flight here:

I did see that video before and was wondering why there wasn't much talk of it... was an amazing jump. And so was len10's jump. Both those guys are pretty brave souls :)

Or bladder decompression. Many, if not most current generation kites turn into a ball of wet tissue when the leading edge bladder pops, or a fitting dislodges. It's happened to me on the water more than once.

Even using the proper equipment it can go wrong as I found out the hard way...

Miraculously I survived with no broken bones just cuts, bruises and a sore arse. I was extremely lucky... Will be back in the air in a week or so :)

What did I do wrong? well, I got complacent after getting the best line I've ever had on the top section and not thinking about the bottom section... turned too hard too soon before clearing the wall and then had to bank again to avoid a lamppost costing me more height and very nearly both testicles.

I still think this is safer than jumping off stuff on a kite though!

Enjoy!

Maybe it was an "inflato lover" PMU sponsored event,
to prove inflatos are superior in that cold temperature :naughty:

I Replace my lines every few weeks and always have new gear. My harness is backed up and so is my chicken loop. When climbing a hill you put way more force on your kite and lines than hanging underneath it. When I fly off the hill I usually am 20 feet or less from the ground. I hope one day some company can make a super sturdy kite for flying. Cause it's so fun!

How do you make sure that your bladder, bladder fittings, casing or stitching won't fail while airborne, thereby killing you?

Or do you stay away from inflatable kites for gliding?
